Top 6 American Idol: Stefano Langone has finally met his end

Top 6 American Idol 10

After weeks and weeks of dodging bullets, Stefano Langone finally found some kryptonite. That leaves just six Idols fighting it out. A couple of once strong American Idol contenders are showing some cracks in their armor. And what has happened to Lauren Alaina (right)?

Stefano Langone has finally met his end on American Idol.

This was a case of the inevitable and undeniable finally happening. What was great about this is Stefano wrote the textbook on how a final performance should look! Putting a pulsing dance beat behind the Stevie Wonder tearjerker was just crazy enough to work. Stefano performed like he had nothing to lose (he didn’t, really), and just left it on the stage, as they say. Maybe having the weight of critiques and votes off of his shoulders allowed him to blossom! His future could be bright! Don’t be surprised if we hear from Stefano again.

Time to rank the remaining Idols! It’s important to note that these rankings are not just about singing skill, or how a contestant performed last (though those things definitely count). It’s an accumulation of all of the performances we have seen, the buzz about the contestant, how a contestant relates to the audience, the audience perception of the contestant, the judges’ critiques, and the contestant’s overall Idol-worthiness.

1. (1) James Durbin – Maybe it was the fact he sang my favorite song of 2010, but I thought James was the one contestant who actually performed like he wants to win. He made his performance an event! Lee DeWyze did that numerous times last season and it was enough to break him away from the (probably) rightful winner, Crystal Bowersox. James is beginning to put some distance between himself and the others. The lead is not insurmountable yet, but somebody had better do something now!
2. (3) Casey Abrams – It looks like Casey has fully healed from that brush with elimination. Amassing a string of quietly strong performances, leading up to that bravado-filled, cocky Maroon 5 performance (featuring a kiss for the Most Beautiful Girl in the World) says Casey is feeling all the way back. It worries me a bit that we’ve seen the return of Growling Casey, but for the most part, the growl was used to efficient artistic effect. It was certainly enough to send him flying past a contestant who seems to be treading water…
3. (2) Scotty McCreery – Last week, I reluctantly left Scotty at number two because Casey still seemed on wobbly legs. That’s over. While contestants like Casey and James are pushing the envelope, Scotty seems utterly content right smack in the middle of his box. This brings about an interesting question – does Scotty really need or want to win this show? His future in country music seems quite secure. He’s definitely preaching to his own choir. Should he have to do more than that? That’s a question only he can answer. But, at this trajectory, he won’t win the show. He can only finish third at best. That’s why he is where he is in this ranking.

4. (4) Lauren Alaina – David Bloomberg has wondered aloud if Lauren is shaving off some of the country vote from Scotty. Considering neither of them have been in the bottom three, it would suggest the country contingent is very strong this season! If Lauren were to go, it could propel Scotty right to the finale! But we shouldn’t even be talking about Lauren’s demise, except for the fact that it seems so inevitable – even to her. Nothing positive can be gained by announcing on national television that you don’t think you are as good as your competition. Americans don’t feel sympathy for a quitter. So, after last week’s pep talk, Lauren will either start to blossom and gain momentum for the finale, or she’ll continue to fade away.
5. Jacob Lusk – Uh-oh. A performance as moving as “Dance With My Father” ends up with you in the bottom three? That means there are bigger problems than your singing skill. Jacob, you have no problem with your singing skill! So, that means the audience does not like you enough. Is it that “Man In the Mirror” fracas you never really apologized for that is bothering folks? Is there something in your manner that still makes people think you feel a wee bit superior? Did it help that the other contestants think you are a diva? (They probably meant it in the most loving way possible, but Americans love to bring divas down!) Jacob, your number one job is changing America’s mind about you, personally. I just don’t know if you have time.
6. (6) Haley Reinhart – Lovely Haley. Some people think I should be ranking you at number one. No way in hell. All those bottom three appearances – though you have picked up speed in the last few weeks – are saying you aren’t winning the kind of votes you need for a prolonged stay. I fear you will be the next to go.
